Record a warning light without guessing

Your handbook and a competent diagnosis matter more than the colour alone.

01

Make safety the first decision

If the handbook tells you to stop, or the vehicle behaves unsafely, follow that instruction and obtain assistance. A warning-light article cannot decide whether your particular car is safe to drive. Find the exact symbol and message in the correct handbook.

02

Keep an accurate description

Once safely parked, note the symbol, exact text, whether it is flashing or steady and what the car was doing when it appeared. Add the date and mileage. Include recent work or other changes without assuming that they caused the problem.

03

Preserve the evidence

A stored fault code is a clue within a diagnostic process, not a parts shopping list. Avoid clearing information simply to make the dashboard look normal. Give the workshop your observations and let it decide which tests are appropriate.

04

Record the outcome

After an assessment, keep the written findings, work completed and any remaining symptoms. A light that goes out does not automatically explain why it appeared. Separate “not currently showing” from “cause confirmed and repaired” in your notes.
