Start with a baseline
Create a dated vehicle page with the registration, model, mileage and the location of its handbook. Keep the actual documents securely; a note that a document exists is different from a copy you can produce. List the spare keys and the paperwork received, then mark unanswered questions separately.
Learn the ordinary controls
With the car parked safely, learn the lights, demister, screenwash controls and how to open the bonnet and fuel flap. Find the manufacturer’s instructions for the model and year. A button that looks familiar may work differently from your last car; do not explore unfamiliar controls while moving.
Make one sensible appointment
If the maintenance history is incomplete, ask a suitable garage to explain what is known and what needs checking. Keep the distinction between a scheduled service, a condition inspection and a fault investigation. Agree the scope before the visit, and retain the invoice afterwards.
Buy slowly
Give yourself a week to notice what is genuinely missing. A phone mount needs a safe position; a mat needs the right shape and secure fixing. Cosmetic accessories can wait. Record each purchase with its purpose, rather than filling the boot with things you might use once.
